Oversight of SDS shifted to Dean of Students

Effective immediately, Student Disabilities Services will report to the Office of the Dean of Students.  Ashley Brickley will continue to coordinate the office, and Joseph Bishop, Disability Specialist and Karen Phillips, Secretary III, will continue in their roles.  The unit will continue to be housed adjacent to Counseling Services on the second floor of the Student Health Clinic.  Brickley will report to Jon Buse, and Phillips and Bishop will report to Brickley. 

Student Affairs employees honored for exemplary service

Sue Follon Exemplary Service Awards were presented to four Student Affairs employees at the Student Affairs Division annual luncheon January 6.  The award recipients are nominated by their peers and exemplify high ideals for job performance and service to students.  Each has had a positive influence on co-workers and elevated the reputation of their work group, their department and the Student Services Division.

Major changes made to December 2010 commencement

Largely in response to alumni and students' comments and needs, several changes are being made to University of Northern Iowa's fall 2010 commencement. These changes include the new venue of the McLeod Center, new diplomas, a reception after the ceremony and electronic RSVPs.

"We want to make the day even more memorable," said Jennifer Suchan, assistant registrar.  "We want to meet the needs of the students and make a more intimate environment for them by creating a smaller venue."

New Diversity Matters Fair provides opportunity to showcase initiatives

As part of the third annual Town Hall Meeting on Diversity, a new Diversity Matters Fair will be held.  The purpose of the fair is to allow departments, student organizations, divisions and other units across campus to showcase their diversity-related initiatives.  The fair will be held on Thursday, January 20, 2011 at the Maucker Union Ballroom from 12 to 2 p.m.  The Town Hall Meeting will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. at the same location. Town Hall Meeting participants are encouraged to allow time to view the fair before coming to the meeting.  

President, Provost join students in honoring veterans

President Ben Allen and Provost Gloria Gibson recently joined Volunteers Tuesday and the newly-formed UNI Student Veterans Association to honor Americas' veterans by adding yellow ribbons to campus trees and handing out American flag pins to celebrate Veterans Day. 

Veterans Day is observed on November 11 each year, regard-less of the day of the week on which it falls. Veterans Day is a national holiday to honor America's veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.

Department of Residence apartments project is celebrated at groundbreaking event

A groundbreaking celebration for the new Department of Residence apartment complex was held November 17 at a site overlooking active construction on the project.  More than 100 guests gathered to commemorate progress on the apartment building which will be available for student occupancy fall 2012. 

Staff gains insight on perspectives of Muslim students, staff members

Presenters and panelists at the recent program, “Islam: Insights and Realities,” shared their experiences with the University to inform staff, faculty and students on unique challenges of Muslims on campus.  They also had suggestions for actions that would make UNI a more welcoming place for Muslims. 

Sue Follon Exemplary Service Award nominations - due Dec. 7

Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to nominate staff in the Division of Student Affairs for the annual Sue Follon Exemplary Service Award. This award honors employees who are committed to quality and excellence and whose efforts and achievements exceed expectations as they work to carry out the division’s mission of helping students succeed. The award commemorates the former division vice president who served the university from 1985-1998.
