"Islam: Insights and Realities" will be presented November 2-3

Understanding Islam is the focus of an upcoming program organized by the Student Affairs Diversity Team.  “Islam: Insights and Realities” will be presented Tuesday, November 2, 1 – 2:30 p.m. and Wednesday, November 3, 10 – 11:30 a.m., at Maucker Union Old Central Ballroom.  This program, eighth in the Insights for Effectiveness series, will include:

FoE Transfer Committee begins work

The Foundations of Excellence (FoE) Transfer Focus Committee kicked off its first meeting on Wednesday, September 8. The meeting was long awaited by all as the steering committee has been working to compile data and assemble volunteers for this semester- long self-study.  According to the John N. Gardner Institute FoE transfer focus website, the committee members will engage in an intensive and comprehensive self study of the transfer student experience and based upon their findings, develop an action plan for improvement.

Residence hall communities collect 1.3 tons of recycled materials each week

Expanding in-room recyling efforts to residence halls across campus has been a big success at the University of Northern Iowa. More than 1.3 tons for recyled materials are collected by City Carton each week, according to a report released the final week of September.  This includes recycling from residence hall communities and dining centers.

Seasonal influenza vaccinations begin October 5

The 2,500 student vaccinations will be FREE of charge. The vaccines are available on a first come, first served basis.  The remaining 500 influenza vaccines will be made available for faculty and staff at the cost of $25. The Student Health Clinic will file a health insurance claim for employees, and the remainder will be covered through payroll deduction.  Payment can also be made with cash or check. Those who want to access the flu vaccination at a UNI seasonal influenza vaccination event should bring a University ID with them to the clinic.

Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner joins Student Health Clinic staff

The UNI Student Health Clinic welcomes Jo Ellen Kubik, who joined the staff this semester as Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner.  In that role, Kubik will meet with students who seek medical attention for mental health conditions.   The position extends mental health care which will continue to be provided by Dr. Abdur Rahim, M.D., F.A.P.A., who serves UNI students through a contract with the UNI Health Clinic. 

Student Affairs staff members Laura Wilson and Mike Weiglein earn Staff Excellence Awards

Two Student Affairs employees earned the highest staff award presented by the Board of Regents State of Iowa, the Staff Excellence Award.  Award winners are selected through a peer nomination process. Staff Excellence Awards were presented by President Ben Allen and Regent Greta Johnson at the 2010 Convocation September 22.

Volunteer Tuesdays is valuable outreach activity for students and community organizations

Every Tuesday, the Student Leadership Center, in cooperation with the Volunteer Center of Cedar Valley, has organized opportunities for students to get into the local communities and volunteer. Each week, a different community agency will be served so students can get a broad experience with agencies in the Cedar Falls/Waterloo area that need our help.

Student Affairs projects updates are focus of September 14 meeting

Dr. Terry Hogan, Vice President for Student Affairs, and division leaders shared key project updates at a meeting in Maucker Union September 14.  The presentations also included a summary of exemplary accomplishments of work groups and individuals who are helping students succeed.

Explore Student Affairs grad program October 15

The UNI Postsecondary Education: Student Affairs master's program, in cooperation with the UNI Division of Student Affairs, is hosting a visit day for prospective graduate students on Friday, October 15, 8:30am-2pm. The day will include a group session about the admissions process, the structure of program, funding/assistantships, housing/community of Cedar Falls,and a panel session with faculty, staff and current graduate students.
