Students can boost financial savvy at seminars sponsored by Office of Student Financial Aid

UNI Office of Student Financial Aid has created an ambitious schedule for the seminar “Live Like a Student.”  Helping students make responsible decisions regarding money is at the center of six 50-minute sessions that will focus on elevating awareness of spending patterns, budgeting and using loans and credit responsibly.  Seminars are offered throughout the semester at a variety of times to allow students to easily fit the seminar into their schedules.  There is no cost to student participants.

Peer Advisors expand capacity of Career Services to meet students' needs

Career Services is introducing the 2010 -2011 team of Peer Advisors.  These students receive extensive training before they meet one-on-one with students to critique resumes and cover letters and administer mock interviews. They also present workshops to student organizations and residence hall communities on career readiness topics.

The 2010-11 Career Services Peer Advisors are:  Katie Moorman, Ellen Nuss, Amanda Schickel, Brittany Fett, Darion Watson, Jenny Gibbs, Libbe Hassenfritz, Allison West, Gabe Tovar, Nick Sibenaller, David Miller, Amanda Boyer and Kasey Tumilty.

MAP-Works® Contributes to New Student Success

Beginning September 13, 2010, new freshmen at UNI are increasing their chances of success by taking a 20-minute survey, as part of a new retention and success program called MAP-Works®.  Immediately after taking the survey each student receives an individualized, confidential report that includes valuable feedback, recommendations and information.  Faculty/staff with professional connections to each student also obtain access to the reports.  These “Direct-Connects” offer encouragement, information and referrals related to freshman success.

UNI Admissions hosts talented middle school students in Educational Talent Search

Seventh and eighth grade students who participated in 2010 Educational Talent Search are returning to school with the advantage of insight into opportunities in their future.  University of Northern Iowa Vice President and Provost office and the U.S. Department of Education funded the four-week summer school program which included instruction in reading, writing, math and computer technology at UNI’s Center for Urban Education in Waterloo, plus hands-on workshops at UNI and visits with admissions and financial aid representatives.

UNI Admissions Ambassadors and Advisor Paul Sapp earn national awards

The success of University of Northern Iowa Student Admissions Ambassadors was in a national spotlight at the recent conference of Affiliated Student Advancement Programs held in Kansas City, Missouri.  UNI earned a 2010 Network Award for Outstanding Organization and Advisor Paul Sapp earned a 2010 Network Award for Outstanding Advisor.

UNI integrates in-room recycling to all residence halls

In-room recycling will be available in all residence halls and the ROTH apartment complex beginning this fall at the University of Northern Iowa. 

UNI will distribute 2,800 recycling containers to dorm rooms and ROTH apartments.  A room in each residence hall and ROTH has been designated as the collection center for sorting recycled plastic, tin, glass, cardboard and mixed paper. 

Steps towards bringing in-room recycling to students on-campus began after a successful recycling pilot program showed that individual recycling bins were effective for increasing recycling. 

UNI Student Health Clinic Receives AAAHC Accreditation

The University of Northern Iowa Student Health Clinic has achieved accreditation by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC/AccreditationAssociation).  Status as an accredited organization means the UNI Health Clinic has met nationally recognized standards for the provision of quality health care, set by the Accreditation Association. Almost 5,000 ambulatory health care organizations across the United States are accredited by AAAHC.

Students Affairs committee collaborates with student affairs graduate program

Maximizing resources involves more than close attention to financials.   A new Student Affairs Division initiative embodied in The Postsecondary Education Partnership Committee will leverage intellectual resources and professional experiences to elevate the effectiveness of collaboration between Student Affairs and the Postsecondary Education: Student Affairs graduate program. 

Workshop participants dedicated to undoing racism

University of Northern students, staff and faculty, along with members of the Cedar Valley community, dedicated three days last week to building understanding of social transformation.  The workshop, Undoing Racism, was hosted by University of Northern Iowa and Allen College.  It was organized by the Cedar Valley Citizens for Undoing Racism, a coalition lead by Belinda Creighton-Smith, a pastor at Faith Temple Baptist Church in Waterloo, and Cedar Falls Mayor Jon Crews. 

Outstanding student employees are honored at awards event

The Student Employee of the Year recognition event is at the heart of a full week of Student Employee Appreciation Week activities across campus.  Offices celebrate the talent and accomplishments of students who contribute to the campus as employees.  Financial Aid staff members plan and host the UNI Student Employee of the Year recognition program as an extension of their role for coordination of student employment.
