MAP-Works® Contributes to New Student Success

Posted on Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

Beginning September 13, 2010, new freshmen at UNI are increasing their chances of success by taking a 20-minute survey, as part of a new retention and success program called MAP-Works®.  Immediately after taking the survey each student receives an individualized, confidential report that includes valuable feedback, recommendations and information.  Faculty/staff with professional connections to each student also obtain access to the reports.  These “Direct-Connects” offer encouragement, information and referrals related to freshman success.

Because of its powerful potential to impact student performance and retention, faculty/staff and student peers across campus are involved in encouraging new freshmen to take the survey and utilize the assistance that is automatically provided.

Beyond the significant value of the feedback itself, incentives to take the survey include a variety of opportunities to win prizes: ten winners of $50 University Book and Supply gift cards for taking the survey the first day; “house” pizza parties for those on-campus communities where at least 85% of new freshmen take the survey by October 2, 2010; and, a “grand prize” of either room and board for spring semester or a $500 gift card to University Book and Supply (student’s choice) for a student who completes the survey by October 2, 2010.

MAP-Works® is a collaborative project of the university’s Divisions of Academic Affairs and Student Affairs under the sponsorship of the First Year Council. More information about the MAP-Works® program is available at and by contacting Campus Coordinator Drake Martin at
