Student Affairs staff members Laura Wilson and Mike Weiglein earn Staff Excellence Awards

Two Student Affairs employees earned the highest staff award presented by the Board of Regents State of Iowa, the Staff Excellence Award.  Award winners are selected through a peer nomination process. Staff Excellence Awards were presented by President Ben Allen and Regent Greta Johnson at the 2010 Convocation September 22.

Laura Wilson is Assistant Director of Career Services with responsibilities to the College of Business Administration.  Her nominators highlighted the positive impact Laura has had on the Cooperative Education/Internship process which serves more than 350 students per year.  She re-organized the process as an online interaction which made it more accessible for students and employers.  She advises hundreds of College of Business Administration students to help them connect to internships, cooperative employment experiences and full-time employment.    Laura’s interaction with employers has kept UNI students on the top of employers’ lists for recruiting. 

Laura coordinated the 2010 conference for College Career Professionals of Iowa, an event that showcased UNI and provided career development workshops for 60 career services professionals from 23 Iowa colleges and universities.  She is an ongoing resource for CBA advisory boards on career-related topics.    She was nominated by co-worker Libby Vanderwall  and Bob Frederick, Director of Office of Career Services.

Mike Weiglein is an Assistant Manager at Piazza Dining Center.  His responsibilities include leading the team of student supervisors, food service supervisors and cooks.  He manages the receiving and food pulling activities.  The operation benefits from Mike’s thorough understanding on inventory maintenance and staff scheduling.  He is a skilled trouble shooter when equipment issues arise and is called by dining services across campus to consult on equipment operations. 

Mike’s leadership has resulted in improved staff performance and satisfaction.  Rosie Lang, Piazza Manager, his nominator and supervisor said, “He is committed to success for himself and his team.  He attends professional meetings, volunteers for campus committees, dedicates himself to self improvement through reading and practice and inspires others to do the same. Mike’s reputation is built on treating others with respect and dignity and following through on his commitments.”
