Microaggressions in Higher Education Classrooms

Date: Monday, October 28, 2013

Time: 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Location: Center for Multicultural Education

Presenter: Stephanie R. Logan, Ed.D, Assistant Professor - Elementary Education

Session description: Microaggressions are everyday insults, indignities, and demeaning messages sent to people of color or other marginalized groups (women, LGBT persons, those with disabilities, religious minorities, and so on)by often well-intentioned individuals who are unaware of the hidden messages being sent to them. This presentation will focus on racial microaggressions and their impact on the classroom environment via the stories and experiences of students of color attending a predominately White institution. The stories and experiences shared will highlight racially microaggressive comments made in classroom settings, who typically makes racially microaggressive comments, and how students and faculty respond to these occurrences. Bring your lunch to our short learning session, and please register below.

Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all UNI-sponsored events.  If a reasonable accommodation is needed to participate in this program, please contact Shelley Matthews at (273-7224 or email  at least one week prior to the event.
