Outstanding UNI students were honored at the 2011 UNI Leadership Awards Ceremony for their contributions to the university community. The annual recognition event was held April 26 at Maucker Union. Awards were presented by university administrators and advisors.
Reilly Ann Zlab is the recipient of the Dr. Sue Follon Scholarship for Women in Leadership.
This scholarship recognizes students for their leadership contributions to UNI and their potential to model leadership for women. Applicants show evidence of leadership potential through their awareness of social issues, including those affecting women; desire to make a difference; demonstrated commitment to serving others; and ethical behavior.
Darion Watson is the Student Employee of the Year. He is also the State of Iowa Student Employee of the year. More information about Darion’s state award is available here.
Adam Haselhuhn, Jacob Rudy and Darion Watson are the 2011 recipients of the LUX Service Award which is presented annually to those undergraduate students who best represent the ideal of service to the university community. More information on the recipients is available here.
Amy Buckendahl, Paul Davis and Caitlin Rafferty are recipients of the UNI Commitment to C.A. R.E Award. C.A.R.E. stands for creating a responsible environment; the award honors outstanding leadership, dedication and efforts to creating a responsible environment at the university.
Jill Hohnecker, Erin Elsasser, Elizabeth Robotham, Samantha Burdick, Amy R. Rodilosso, Sharon Bender and Samantha Jaeger were honored as Department of Residence Gold Star Award winners. This is the highest recognition for student leadership in the Department of Residence communities.
Greek life recognition went to Sigma Phi Epsilon and Alpha Xi Delta, Greek Chapters of the Year.
Chris Miller received the Emerging Leader of the Year Award. He was honored for his leadership of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and for his involvement with Northern Iowa Student Government. Nominees are juniors or seniors who have excelled and exemplified outstanding leadership through their involvement and activities.
The Student Nature Society received the Student Organization of the Year Award. The Student Nature Society is a university sponsored biology club. The group focuses on exposing students to the natural world though volunteer work and nature-based activities and field trips. The group typically works with Black Hawk County Conservation, Hartman Reserve, to assist with its maple syrup festival, Black Hawk Wildlife Rehabilitation and others. Earth Day activities are another way SNS members interact with others in the community and on campus.
Program of Distinction Awards recipients have developed an outstanding program for all students of the UNI community to attend. 2011 winners of this award are: Darwin Week (presented by UNI Freethinkers and Inquirers), Relay for Life (presented by Colleges Against Cancer) and Connecting Alumni to students Traditions Committee.
Joel Anderson, Chelsea Anderson, Trevor Boeckmann, Polina Bogomolova, Jennifer Nulty, Casi Roethler and Tony Smith were recognized with Student Leader of the Year Awards. This award honors juniors and seniors who have provided service, dedication, and leadership through their involvement and activities.
