Toaster pastry has center stage at Lawther field September 23 (with slide show)

Posted on Friday, September 23rd, 2011

Students in the Residence Hall Association provided the key volunteer piece to make the September 23 Pop-Tart event a big success. The event dominated central campus Friday afternoon and included music, games and other activities from noon to 3 p.m.

The story of this event began last spring when UNI student Karelyn Pohl was informed that she took second place in the Pop-It-Forward Contest, a national search for fun and creative ideas for sharing one million Pop-Tarts toaster pastries. Pohl entered the competition through Facebook, by answering the question, "How would you share 1,000,000 Pop-Tarts?" Her idea was to put Pop-Tarts in ice cream and share the treats with as many people as possible.

With the help of the Kellogg Company, Pohl decided to use the 5,000 Pop-Tarts in ice cream treats during an afternoon festival September 23.

Melissa Joy, a graduate student working with student engagement in the Department of Residence worked with the Residence Hall Association (RHA) to make this event happen.
