Jump Start is an extended orientation program designated to facilitate the successful transition of underrepresented students to the University of Northern Iowa. Students from ethnic and racial minority groups and students who have participated in TRiO programs (such as Upward Bound and Educational Talent Search) are invited to Jump Start starting in March. Participants move to campus one week before classes begin, engaging in interactive sessions on topics including relationships and cultural identity, student involvement, financial literacy, academic planning, and leadership. Students are mentored during and after the program by Pathfinders, current UNI student leaders who have participated in Jump Start in a previous year. 100 new first-year and transfer students participated in Jump Start in August 2016, guided by 12 Pathfinders and a team of program coordinators in Student Success and Retention.
