The fourth annual Rainbow Reception was held on September 11th, 2013. The event featured 20 resource tables and attracted approximately 60 participants. Dean of the Students, Leslie Williams, spoke at the start of the reception about UNI’s success in opening the first LGBT* Student Center on campus and highlighted the updates to the Safe Zone Ally training program, which will now include an in-person component. President Bill Ruud also welcomed the LGBT* community back to campus saying that UNI is a place where you come to be you.
On Monday, September 23 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., UNI hosted Iowa’s Statewide Military and Veterans Conference for the first time. The title of this year’s conference was “Uncamouflaging Campus Diversity: Creating Transparency through Cultural Competence." Breakout sessions covered issues such as how to best serve those suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury, how military culture brings diversity to our campus and community, how to support military family members on campus, and several other topics. Over 200 people attended the conference.
UNI’s dining centers, the Rialto and the Piazza, as well as Prexy's restaurant in Maucker Union, were awarded the Blue Zones Restaurant Certification. This designation is given to restaurants that complete a specific set of criteria by implementing changes that create a healthy dining environment. Some of UNI’s efforts include serving healthy sides with entrees, making half portions available, and providing nutritional informational as a part of the online menus.
Veteran Student Services Coordinator Julia Heuer and six members of the Counseling Center staff -- Priscilla Villarreal, Jennifer Murra, Stephanie Germann, Stephanie Harken, Gretchen Honsell, and David Towle -- traveled to Illinois State University in May to attend a training session on working with military service members and veterans on campus.
