President Ruud and the Executive Management Team recently approved the formation of a new campus-wide Community Engagement Council. The group will provide leadership, coordination and advocacy to achieve the community engagement-related goals of the University. Serving on the Council will be staff appointees from the Student Involvement Center and the Department of Residence; student appointees will represent Nonprofit Leadership Alliance, Northern Iowa Student Government, Residence Hall Association, Student Athlete Advisory Council, and Service and Leadership Council.

On March 28, the UNI Creative Life Research Center produced TEDx UNI: Charting Destiny, an event to launch conversations and inspire positive growth for individuals, institutions, and our culture. Of the ten speakers and performers at the event, three were students at UNI.
The National Association of College and University Food Services (NACUFS) has named Carol Petersen, Director of Dining Services at the University of Northern Iowa as recipient of the 2015 NACUFS Midwest Region Distinguished Service Award. Carol received the award in recognition of her exemplary and enduring contributions to the food service industry and to the association, including her service as a member of the NACUFS Board of Directors and as the President of NACUFS Midwest Region.
Bob Frederick, Director of Career Services and Community College Relations, will guide the development of our new student engagement initiative. Work on the project will begin immediately and will involve most units in our division and, ultimately, many others across campus. Thanks to all for participating in the processes that have led us to this point: the division strategic planning effort in 2010; more recent directors retreat and two half-day “concept” sessions with staff from programming units across the division; and the most recent consideration of who should lead the effort.
A new Council of Student Leaders has been created on campus and has begun meeting this semester. Developed by the Office of the Dean of Students, the council is comprised of 31 leaders from across campus, each of whom represents a specific constituency. The council complements the continuing, formal student governance structure that is NISG and seeks to broaden and strengthen the network of engaged student leaders on campus.
